I Made a Zine!

For a creative exercise, I designed a zine showcasing my 2 week vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I wanted challenge myself to see how quickly I could start and finish a project.

The Challenge - How quickly can I start and finish a project?

My Goals:

  1. Create my first zine

  2. Prioritise completion over perfection

  3. Don't overthink it

I used InDesign for the zine and Photoshop to edit photos. All photos were taken by me during a recent trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

My Process

I cleaned up my 8 pages, and converted them into 3 PDFs using this zine arranger.

  • black and white
  • blue and white, with a risograph halftone effect

  • full colour

My 1 page zine was now ready to print!

Next, I began designing. 8 pages quickly became 12.

I realised the more time I spent experimenting with design, the longer this project was taking. This was the opposite of my goal! So I stopped, made some cuts, and reduced my zine back to 8 pages.

I started by selecting photos from my recent trip. I grouped them into potential themes.

Here is the final product!

I really enjoyed this challenge. It has made me more aware of how much time I spend experimenting with design and consulting references. This challenge's time constraint forces me to trust my gut and be decisive quickly.

I like how this zine turned out. It is playful, informational, and most importantly, completed!!!
